| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse of this hammered silver denier displays a two-line Latin inscription in the field reading MAR / CS, serving as an abbreviated reference to the mint city of Marseille (Massilia/Marsillia) combined with additional abbreviated text. The lettering is executed in the same bold, rustic capital style as the obverse, consistent with provincial Carolingian die-work of the mid-8th century. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, with no border or peripheral decoration, as is typical of deniers produced under Pepin the Short prior to the monetary reforms of Charlemagne. |
