The entire motif is set within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a beaded or toothed outer border. The design is characteristic of the hammered coinage of early medieval Hungary, rendered in a bold but irregular style. |

Stephen II inherited the Hungarian throne as a minor following his father Coloman's death in 1116, and his reign was marked by persistent dynastic warfare against pretenders — most notably Álmos, his blinded uncle, whose supporters repeatedly sought Byzantine backing to unseat him. The court's instability almost certainly disrupted regular minting, which may account for the multiple die groupings cataloged under H#84 through H#87.
