| Reverse description | The reverse of this hammered denier features a series of horizontal parallel lines spanning the full width of the flan, a design element commonly interpreted as a stylized representation of a building facade or simply as a decorative register divider on 11th-century episcopal issues. A small cross pattee appears in the lower left field, providing a religious symbol typical of medieval ecclesiastical coinage. The flat, unpolished surface and irregular flan edge are consistent with hand-hammered production. No legend or additional inscription is present on the reverse. The austere, linear composition reflects the transitional coinage style of the Bishopric of Basel in the mid-11th century. |
