Beschrijving voorzijde Central field dominated by a plain cross pattée within a beaded inner circle, dividing the field into four quarters. The surrounding legend reads + ANFVS REX in Latin characters, interrupted by a decorative stop, running clockwise between the inner beaded circle and the outer rim. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, typical of hammered billon coinage of the Leonese-Castilian monetary tradition of the early twelfth century.

Aanvullende informatie

Alfonso VI died in 1109, making this issue from the final year of a reign that had, at its height, controlled the largest territorial expanse of any Iberian ruler since the Visigothic period. His capture of Toledo in 1085 prompted the Almoravid intervention from North Africa — a consequence that reshaped Iberian politics for generations. Billon coinage of this period survives in poor condition as a rule, the alloy being particularly susceptible to the alkaline soils of the Castilian plateau.
