The Bishopric of Vic exercised temporal coinage rights in Catalonia through much of the medieval period, but production was intermittent and subject to ongoing jurisdictional friction with the Crown of Aragon. The dinero keys type falls within the episcopate of a period when ecclesiastical mints across Iberia were increasingly pressured to surrender minting privileges to secular lords — many did so within a generation of this issue.
Billon content in Vic issues from this period is notably debased even by contemporary regional standards, which accelerated wear in circulation.
