The uppermost line reads 'al-Sultan al-A'zam' (The Supreme Sultan), the second 'Qaidu Khan', and the third 'Darb Samarqand' (Struck at Samarqand). The script is executed in an angular, somewhat irregular style typical of hammered dirhams produced under the Chagatai Khanate, reflecting the workshop traditions of the Samarqand mint during the late thirteenth century.
