Ibrahim I came to the throne in 1640 after his brother Murad IV died without an heir, having spent most of his own life imprisoned in the kafes — the palace cage where potential rivals were confined, sometimes for decades. His ten-year reign became notorious for fiscal mismanagement severe enough that the imperial treasury resorted to repeated debasements of the silver coinage. Whether this particular dirhem predates the worst of that debasement or reflects it depends heavily on the specific die state and silver purity, which varied considerably across mints during his reign.
