| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field dominated by the elaborate tughra of Sultan Mehmed IV rendered in raised relief, the calligraphic device composed of interlacing loops and ascending strokes characteristic of Ottoman imperial monograms. The tughra is surrounded by a border of stylized foliate or dotted ornamental elements encircling the irregular flan. The overall execution is typical of hammered provincial Ottoman coinage, with the design occupying nearly the full surface of the coin. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Mehmed IV came to the throne in 1648 at age six, following the deposition and subsequent execution of his father Ibrahim I — one of the more violent successions in Ottoman history. Coins struck in his name during this first year reflect the regency chaos in Istanbul, with actual power held by the Valide Sultan and competing factions of the Janissaries. Baghdad had only been retaken from the Safavids in 1638 after a siege of forty days, and the eyalet mint resuming Ottoman coinage there was itself a relatively recent re-establishment.
