Ida B. Wells was added to the American Women Quarters Program after Congress authorized the series in 2020 to run through 2025. Wells's selection places one of the most consequential investigative journalists of the 19th century — whose anti-lynching reporting made her a target of mob violence and forced her into exile from Memphis in 1892 — into a series that has otherwise leaned toward scientists and suffragists.
The .999 silver strikes are collector-only pieces produced at San Francisco or West Point; none entered general circulation.
