正面描述 Helmeted head of Athena facing right, rendered in fine Hellenistic style with naturalistic detail. The goddess wears an Attic helmet adorned with a crested plume and decorated bowl, with elaborate hair falling in waves beneath the helmet rim. The facial features are finely engraved, exhibiting the high-relief portraiture characteristic of Ionian civic coinage of the second century BC. The neck is slightly draped, and the field is otherwise plain.

附加信息

Priene's silver coinage of this period reflects the city's complicated position under Seleucid and later Pergamene influence following the Peace of Apamea in 188 BC, which reshuffled Aegean power so abruptly that several Ionian cities scrambled to assert civic identity through their mints. Priene itself was a relatively modest polis — famous more for its grid-planned streets and the Temple of Athena Polias than for any commercial weight — so its silver output was never prolific.

The rarity of this type owes more to limited civic resources than to historical accident.
