Austria's ECU souvenir series of the 1990s occupied an awkward commercial niche — priced for collectors but carrying no legal tender status and no fixed exchange relationship to the European Currency Unit they nominally referenced. Bruckner, born in Ansfelden in 1824, spent decades in relative obscurity before his symphonies gained traction largely through the advocacy of Wagner's circle in Vienna. His appointment as court organist and his professorship at the Vienna Conservatory came late, and critical acceptance later still.
Gold-plated copper-nickel issues of this type were struck in large quantities for the gift market, not the numismatic one.
