Obverse description Imperial orb surmounted by a cross, set within a cusped quatrefoil or trefoil frame at the center of the field. A beaded inner circle surrounds the central device, with the circumferential legend reading .MAXIMILIANVS.ROMA.REX. in Gothic-style Latin lettering, separated by cross and pellet stops. The overall design reflects the late medieval hammered goldgulden tradition of the Holy Roman Empire.
