Litra

Alaisa Archonidea — modern Halaesa, on Sicily's north coast — was among the cities that found itself navigating the destructive power struggle between Carthage and Syracuse in the mid-fourth century. The city minted independently, a privilege that reflected its status as a free Greek foundation rather than a subject town. Bronze litrai of this type are scarce; Halaesa never achieved the output of the major Sicilian mints, and the surviving population of this issue is thin enough that die studies remain incomplete.
