Flanking the ear are partial letters of the ethnic inscription reading MOΡΓ (an abbreviation for Morgantina), distributed in the field to either side of the grain. The grain ear motif is a hallmark of Sicilian agricultural prosperity and is rendered with confident, naturalistic detail consistent with mid-fifth-century BC engraving traditions. |

Morgantina's silver litrai from this period are among the earliest coins attributable to the site, issued by an indigenous Sicel community still operating under its own political identity before the city's eventual Syracusan domination. The mint's output was small and intermittent, which accounts for the rarity of surviving specimens across all reference collections.
