At the top, the Christian year '1814' is inscribed in Latin numerals, followed by three lines of Javanese characters reading 'English Company, struck at Surapringga (Surabaya), 1741' (in the Javanese Saka era). The mintmaster's initial 'Z' appears in the exergue at the base of the design. The coin bears a reeded border, and the flat, uninflected field reflects the utilitarian, non-pictorial aesthetic typical of East India Company coinage produced for the Javanese market. |
