Hasbro periodically revised Monopoly's in-game currency denominations and artwork, and the 2001 edition introduced a redesigned note series that retained the traditional pastel color coding while updating the graphic style. The $500 is the highest denomination in the standard set — the note most players accumulate and least frequently spend, which means surviving examples from played sets tend to be cleaner than the smaller values.

The watermark is a curiosity for a novelty item: included almost certainly as a deterrent against photocopying for use as classroom or game replacement currency, not as a genuine security measure.
