| Obverse description | Within a plain inner circle, a small cross pattée occupies the centre of the field. The royal legend, rendered in Anglo-Saxon majuscule capitals, runs continuously around the periphery between the inner circle and the coin's irregular edge. The die-cutting exhibits the characteristic boldly cut, slightly irregular letterforms of the period, consistent with hand-engraved Anglo-Saxon dies of the early tenth century. |
