Leopold III — later canonized in 1485 and named patron saint of Austria — ruled during a period when the Babenberg margraves were consolidating authority and expanding their ecclesiastical patronage aggressively. The bracteate-style pennies of this period were produced at a handful of Austrian mints whose precise locations remain disputed among specialists.
