Pettau — modern Ptuj in Slovenia — operated as a minting location under the Babenberg dukes during the early thirteenth century, one of several regional centers authorized to strike small silver coinage as Leopold VI consolidated ducal monetary administration across Styria and Austria proper. Leopold VI, called "the Glorious," was among the most politically active rulers of his dynasty: he mediated between the papacy and the Hohenstaufen emperors, led crusading expeditions, and hosted the negotiations that produced the 1225 peace between the warring factions in the Fifth Crusade. His pfennigs from Pettau reflect the decentralized minting geography of the Babenberg domains rather than any single unified coinage policy.
