Leopold VI ruled Austria and Styria simultaneously from 1194 until his death in 1230, a consolidation that made him the most powerful territorial prince in the German-speaking world of his generation. The Vienna mint operated under his aggressive economic program, which included deliberate currency renewal policies — Brakteaten and thin bracteate-adjacent issues like this pfennig were periodically called in and reissued, forcing subjects to exchange old coins at a discount, effectively taxing liquid wealth.
