Malaysian postal orders denominated in Brunei ringgit are a direct product of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement signed between Malaysia and Brunei in 1967, under which the Brunei dollar and Malaysian ringgit circulate at par in both countries. A postal order issued in Malaysian ringgit and payable in Brunei currency — or vice versa — was administratively straightforward precisely because the exchange rate was, by treaty, fixed at one-to-one.
At 50 ringgit, this sits at the high end of what postal orders were typically used for — large enough to suggest commercial or remittance use rather than routine correspondence fees.
