Reverse description The reverse repeats the central square perforation with raised borders, surrounded by four groups of Chinese characters disposed in the traditional cardinal arrangement around the hole. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in classical Sino-Vietnamese convention, the legends read 國 (nation) and 法大 (Great France) to the right, 當二 (worth two) below, and 南安之 (Annam) to the left, referencing the French protectorate of Annam. The calligraphic characters are rendered in a bold, slightly irregular hand consistent with period Monnaie de Paris practice for Indochinese colonial issues. No additional devices or borders are present beyond the peripheral rim.
