Kastilo — modern Castulo, near Linares in the upper Guadalquivir valley — was one of the wealthiest mining towns in Hispania, sitting atop silver and lead deposits that Rome exploited heavily after the Second Punic War. Local bronze coinage like this sextans circulated during a period when the city retained enough administrative autonomy to issue its own currency, even as Roman fiscal pressure steadily tightened. That autonomy effectively ended with the Sertorian War, which makes the closing date of this series no coincidence.
