Obverse description Half-length frontal effigy of St. Nicholas (Nikolaus), depicted in episcopal vestments, his right hand raised in a gesture of benediction with fingers extended, and his left hand holding the Book of Gospels before his chest. The figure is rendered in the Byzantine hierarchical style, with stylized drapery folds and a nimbus surrounding the head. The saint occupies the central field of the concave flan.

Reverse description Half-length frontal figure of the ruler Mitzo Asen, crowned and clad in imperial loros, holding a scepter surmounted by a cross in his right hand. The crowning figure at upper left, partially visible, may represent a saint or divine investiture motif. The composition fills the concave field of the scyphate flan.
