Delphi's independent coinage reflects the sanctuary's unusual political status — the city functioned less as a conventional polis than as a Panhellenic religious center administered by the Amphictyonic League, giving it the authority to strike its own silver despite limited civic infrastructure. Production was almost certainly tied to the sanctuary economy: festival fees, dedications converted to specie, and the enormous volume of exchange surrounding the Pythian Games every four years.
The trihemiobol denomination — one and a half obols — served small transactions at the sanctuary precinct level.
