The "Characato" designation traces to the agricultural villages surrounding Arequipa, whose inhabitants — known as characatos — became emblematic of southern Peruvian regional identity. This gold piece was struck as part of Peru's mid-nineteenth century effort to assert monetary credibility during chronic fiscal instability following independence, when successive governments struggled to maintain convertible currency against a backdrop of foreign debt and internal conflict.
Arequipa's mint, though shorter-lived than Lima's, produced distinctive coinage tied closely to the silver and gold outputs of the southern Andean mining economy.
