The v. Bodelschwinghsche Anstalten Bethel is a large Protestant social welfare institution based in Bielefeld, Germany, operating one of Europe's largest diaconal foundations. Bethel has issued its own internal currency — the Bethel-Euro — for use within its network of hospitals, workshops, and residential communities, a practice with roots going back to the late nineteenth century when the institution issued "Bethel-Pfennige" to facilitate commerce within its largely self-contained settlement.
The watermark on a paper voucher of this type is a meaningful security measure, not a formality — Bethel's internal scrip has real purchasing power within the community, and counterfeiting has historically been a genuine concern.
