The v. Bodelschwinghsche Anstalten Bethel is a large Protestant welfare institution in Bielefeld, Germany, operating since 1867 primarily as a residential and care community for people with epilepsy and other disabilities. Bethel-Euro vouchers were introduced alongside Germany's transition to the euro in 2002 as a continuation of the facility's long-running internal currency system — a practice that dates back to the late nineteenth century and was designed to keep spending within the community's own network of workshops, shops, and services.
