Spade money of this type was issued by Wei during the Warring States period, when competing kingdoms maintained entirely separate currency systems as a deliberate assertion of political independence from Zhou and from each other. The *yanhuan* form — with its hollow socket handle and rounded shoulders — is a regional variant tied specifically to Wei's central territories around the Yellow River basin, distinguishing it from the square-shouldered spades of neighboring states.
