Tode Möngke ruled the Golden Horde from 1280 to 1287, a reign notable for his conversion to Islam — unusual enough among the Chinggisid leadership of the period that contemporaries remarked on his apparent withdrawal from administrative affairs in favor of religious observance. The Qrim (Crimea) mint was one of the Horde's most active western production centers, strategically positioned on trade routes feeding into the Black Sea commercial network that connected Mongol-controlled territory to Genoese merchants operating out of Caffa.
Sagdeeva's dual cataloguing under #38 and #39 suggests die or inscription variants within the type.
