| Obverse description | The elaborate tughra of Sultan Mahmud I rendered in ornate Arabic calligraphy occupies the central field, executed in the distinctive Ottoman monogram style. The inscription 'عز نصره' (may his victory be glorified) appears alongside the mint and date formula 'ضرب في مصر سنة ١١٤٣' (struck in Misr [Egypt], year 1143 AH). A small bunch of grapes flanked by two arrows appears to the right of the tughra, serving as a decorative mintmark device. The legends are struck in bold relief against a flat field, characteristic of Ottoman hammered gold coinage of the period. The coin's edge bears a fine beaded border encircling the entire design. |
