Jersey's fractional shilling denominations were calculated against the local count of 13 pence to the shilling — a survival of the island's pre-decimalization accounting system that diverged entirely from sterling practice. The States of Jersey issued this copper piece under royal sanction but with full local authority over the denomination structure, reflecting the island's status as a Crown dependency rather than part of the United Kingdom proper.
The KM#3 type spans nearly a quarter century of production, during which die quality and copper alloy consistency varied considerably across the series.
