Obverse description Central device consisting of a radiant sun with a human face in full relief at the centre, emitting alternating straight and wavy rays that fill the field. Seven five-pointed stars are arranged in an arc above the sun, flanking it on either side. The circular legend reads REPUB. SUD PERUANA around the upper periphery, with CUZ. AÑO D. 1838 around the lower periphery, all separated by dot stops. The coin is struck within a fine beaded border.

Reverse description Central field bears the fractional denomination 1/2 in large numerals surmounted by a small patriarchal cross at the apex, with ESCUDO inscribed below the fraction and the mint assayer initials M.S. beneath. The entire central device is encircled by a wreath of laurel and oak branches tied at the base, with berried sprigs at the junctions. A beaded border frames the design at the periphery. The field is plain and unadorned beyond the wreath.
