The inscriptions are enclosed within a wreath of palm or laurel branches tied at the base, rendered in low relief and framing the text on both sides. The field is otherwise plain, with no additional ornamental devices. The overall composition is characteristic of the epigraphic coinage tradition employed at the Muscat Mint during the late nineteenth century. |

The Sultanate of Muscat and Oman struck copper coinage in the 1890s partly to assert administrative coherence over a polity whose interior and coastal territories were governed under increasingly separate arrangements — a tension that would eventually produce the formal Muscat-Oman division recognized by the British. The without-central-circle variety, catalogued as KM#4.2, is distinguished from KM#4.1 solely by that absent die element, a detail that almost certainly reflects a worn or damaged working die rather than any intentional design change.
