The barrillo was a provisional copper coinage system unique to the colonial Philippines, used to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued the islands throughout the eighteenth century. Lead substitutes were occasionally struck as patterns or emergency proposals when copper supplies were interrupted or procurement from Mexico delayed. Whether KM#Pn6 ever advanced beyond pattern status is unresolved — no circulating lead barrillo issue from 1743 is documented with confidence.
Manila's monetary supply in this period depended heavily on the Manila Galleon trade, making it structurally vulnerable to any disruption in transatlantic or transpacific shipments.
