| Obverse description | Engraved in the mid-nineteenth-century North American private bank note tradition, the obverse centres on a heraldic vignette of the British Royal Arms supported by lion and unicorn, flanked by two classical allegorical female figures. The bank title FARMERS JOINT STOCK BANK runs in bold letterpress across the middle register, with the denomination ONE DOLLAR in red overprint below; the place and date of issue, Toronto, Feb. 1, 1849, appear in the lower centre beneath manuscript signatures of the Manager and Cashier. |

| Reverse description | The reverse is left largely unprinted on plain cream-coloured paper, carrying as its sole security device a large red letterpress underprint of the word ONE in mirror-reversed orientation across the centre, a measure consistent with Canadian private bank note practice of the period to discourage fraudulent alteration of the denomination. |
