Mauritania's first post-independence coinage was issued following the country's departure from the West African CFA franc zone in 1973, when the ouguiya replaced the CFA franc at a rate of 1 ouguiya to 5 francs. This particular variety omits the Arabic word واحدة ("one") from the denomination inscription — a die anomaly or deliberate revision that distinguishes it from the standard KM#2 type and accounts for the separate catalog listing under the same KM number.
