Banco Nacional Ultramarino began issuing currency in Macau only after the Portuguese colonial administration formalized local note circulation in 1905 — before that, Hong Kong dollars and Mexican pesos dominated trade on the peninsula. This 1 Pataca is among the earliest notes purpose-issued for the territory, and the choice of Bradbury Wilkinson reflected BNU's consistent preference for London security printers across its African and Asian colonial portfolios.
The pataca itself was pegged to the Mexican peso at par, a legacy of centuries of silver trade through the South China Sea. By the time this series ended in 1922, the peso peg had become increasingly difficult to maintain as silver prices fluctuated wildly in the post-WWI commodity markets.
