Azerbaijan's qəpik coinage was introduced following the 2006 redenomination, in which the new manat replaced the old at a rate of 5,000 to 1 — a corrective measure after the original manat had been decimated by post-Soviet hyperinflation in the early 1990s. The copper-plated steel construction was a deliberate cost-reduction choice, standard practice for low-denomination coins in economies still consolidating monetary infrastructure after independence.
