Husayn ibn Ali proclaimed the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule in June 1916, and this coinage followed almost immediately — one of the first acts of a nascent state asserting independence through currency. The Hejaz had no established mint infrastructure, and early strikes of this type were produced under improvised conditions, which accounts for the frequently uneven striking pressure seen across the series. The .833 silver standard matched the contemporary Ottoman Mecidiye, likely a deliberate choice to ease acceptance among a population accustomed to Ottoman coin weights.
