Da Afghanistan Bank introduced this denomination as part of the post-Taliban monetary reconstruction effort that began in 2002, when the afghani was redenominated at a rate of 1,000 old units to 1 new afghani to eliminate the chaos left by years of competing regional currencies and warlord-issued notes.
