Zimbabwe's coinage program launched in 1980 directly alongside independence, replacing Rhodesian issues the same year Robert Mugabe's government assumed power. These 10-cent pieces circulated through nearly two decades of relative monetary stability before hyperinflation began dismantling the currency system in the late 1990s — the very conditions that would eventually render the entire series obsolete.
