Obverse description The Zimbabwe Bird, a stylized soapstone eagle derived from the ancient carvings of Great Zimbabwe, is depicted facing left and perched atop a decorated cylindrical pedestal ornamented with geometric chevron and circle motifs. The national emblem occupies the center of the field, rendered in bold relief. The country name ZIMBABWE arcs along the upper periphery in large Latin letters, while the date of issue appears in the lower field below the pedestal.

Zimbabwe's coinage program launched in 1980 directly alongside independence, replacing Rhodesian issues the same year Robert Mugabe's government assumed power. These 10-cent pieces circulated through nearly two decades of relative monetary stability before hyperinflation began dismantling the currency system in the late 1990s — the very conditions that would eventually render the entire series obsolete.
