Obverse description Central field features a standing allegorical figure, heavily worn, surmounted by a radiant sun or sunburst motif above the head. The legend REPUBLICA DEL PARAGUAY arcs along the upper periphery in large Latin capitals, while the denomination 10 RS appears in the lower segment separated by a horizontal rule. The coin exhibits a scalloped or irregular flan edge characteristic of this pattern issue, with the overall design rendered in low relief consistent with a trial striking.

Additional information

Paraguay's 1856 coinage project never reached circulation. The patterns were struck in Paris — almost certainly by Barre at the Monnaie de Paris — as the young republic attempted to establish a formal national currency for the first time. Political instability and the dominance of foreign coinage in everyday commerce killed the project before any issue was authorized for release.

Mayans 39 is among the rarest documented survivors of this aborted series.
