Paraguay's 1856 coinage project never reached circulation. The patterns were struck in Paris — almost certainly by Barre at the Monnaie de Paris — as the young republic attempted to establish a formal national currency for the first time. Political instability and the dominance of foreign coinage in everyday commerce killed the project before any issue was authorized for release.
Mayans 39 is among the rarest documented survivors of this aborted series.
