Japan's postwar monetary system was in freefall by 1947 — inflation was running at several hundred percent annually, and the Allied occupation authorities were struggling to contain it. Small denomination notes like this 10 Sen piece were a symptom of that chaos: the sen, one-hundredth of a yen, had been effectively worthless in purchasing terms for years before this issue even reached circulation.
The entire sen denomination series was abolished in 1953 under the Currency Unit and Fund Act, which eliminated fractional yen entirely. By that point, most of these notes had already been withdrawn from daily use by sheer economic irrelevance.
