| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse is printed in black on white paper and carries the heading REPUBLICA ARGENTINA at top, with SERIE 006 at upper left and the denomination numeral 2 in the upper corners. A classical allegorical vignette at left shows two cherubs or putti in a pastoral scene, while at right a portrait vignette within an oval frame presents a uniformed military figure in early 19th-century dress. The central text reads EL BANCO PROVINCIAL DE SALTA pagará a la vista y al portador DOS PESOS, with the issuer's name and denomination reinforced in a rectangular panel. A RENOVACIÓN overprint stamp appears prominently across the centre, and manuscript signatures with place and date appear at the lower centre. |

The Banco Provincial de Salta was a provincial institution operating under concession from the Argentine national government during the banking free period of the 1880s, when individual provinces could charter note-issuing banks. That arrangement collapsed almost immediately after this note was printed — the Baring Crisis of 1890 and the catastrophic over-issuance of provincial paper money forced Buenos Aires to nationalize the entire system, and most provincial banks were wound up or absorbed by 1891.
The American Bank Note Company held the printing contracts for several Argentine provincial banks simultaneously during this period, which occasionally creates attribution confusion between series. PS#1172 sits in a very short-lived issue window.
