The Banco Provincial de Salta was a provincial institution operating under concession from the Argentine national government during the banking free period of the 1880s, when individual provinces could charter note-issuing banks. That arrangement collapsed almost immediately after this note was printed — the Baring Crisis of 1890 and the catastrophic over-issuance of provincial paper money forced Buenos Aires to nationalize the entire system, and most provincial banks were wound up or absorbed by 1891.

The American Bank Note Company held the printing contracts for several Argentine provincial banks simultaneously during this period, which occasionally creates attribution confusion between series. PS#1172 sits in a very short-lived issue window.
