Obverse description The Latvian state coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield with a rising sun in the upper half and two passant lions in the lower quarters. Three five-pointed stars arc above the shield, symbolising the three historical regions of Latvia. The legend LATVIJA curves along the upper periphery in bold Latin capitals. The entire composition is flanked by two symmetrical sprigs of oak, their stems crossed at the base, framing the arms in a wreath-like arrangement.

Additional information

Latvia's second coinage period in the late 1930s coincided with the authoritarian consolidation of Kārlis Ulmanis, who had dissolved parliament and assumed the presidency in 1934. These small bronzes continued circulating right through the Soviet occupation of June 1940, after which Latvian coinage ceased entirely for over fifty years.
