Latvia's second coinage period in the late 1930s coincided with the authoritarian consolidation of Kārlis Ulmanis, who had dissolved parliament and assumed the presidency in 1934. These small bronzes continued circulating right through the Soviet occupation of June 1940, after which Latvian coinage ceased entirely for over fifty years.
